Day 1 – October 1st

Here we are, the 1st day of the month. I know I have a busy month ahead so let’s get right into it.

I want to first of all thank Dan Thompson for all the help he has given me creating this blog. I actually taught myself a lesson last week. ‘Instead of going round in circles with a task you are not familiar with seek someone who knows what they are doing so you don’t waste your life away’. So thanks again Dan.

I am going to tell you why I decided to do ‘A month in the life of John Thornhill’

The main reason is to build my business. Creating this blog will see me create another income stream. The more income streams I create the more money I earn. I’m not ashamed to say that what I do this month will ultimately earn me more money.

Secondly, I want to show everyone that there is no real secret to making money online. It’s mostly about taking action, and a lot of it.

Thirdly, I like to help others, I am a firm believer that the more you help others the more you are rewarded. I really think this is the key to a lot of internet marketer’s success. I know this blog will help a lot of people and by helping others I am ultimately helping myself.

Over the next 31 days you will hopefully see me:-

• Launch 2 brand new products.

• Create numerous new websites.

• Add about 10 new eBooks to my eBay inventory.

• Promote about 5-10 products

• Submit about 4-8 articles to the article directories.

• Work on my existing websites.

• Write my newsletter.

• Outsource most of my work.

• Seek new JV partners.

• And a lot lot more.

I would also encourage others to help when they can by adding comments after each post I write if it will help others. I don’t mind the odd link to products but please don’t blatantly promote without helping first.

So with that out of the way let’s get started.

What I Did Today.

I Paid My Affiliates.

The 1st day of the month for me is affiliate payout day. Today I paid all my affiliates all monies owed from all my websites for the month of September 2007. This is done like clockwork on the 1st of each month. I owe a huge part of my success to my affiliates so I always pay out on time.

The lesson here is treat your affiliates like gold. Look after them and they will look after you.

However, treat them like dirt and your business will suffer. I know this from personal experience as I have (and still am) been owed substantial amounts of money for promoting other marketers products on more than one occasion.

The bottom line is I will never promote anything they put their name behind again so who suffers in the long run?

I Launched a Blog.

Yes, this blog has just added another income stream to my business. In fact when I announced this blog on Friday I found my earnings increased by over 500%. This was simply because of the links down the right hand side of the page.

So although blogging is new to me I can highly recommend it.

I Contacted 2 Copywriters.

I currently have 2 products in the early stages of creation that I hope to launch before the end of the month. Although I don’t usually work on 2 new products at the same time one is just about complete. More on this over the coming days.

I Contacted Dave Guindon.

I have been in touch with Dave Guindon today. This was in regards to one of his products ‘Dave’s Online Videos’. I have been meaning to promote this product for months as it’s a quality product so I basically asked Dave if he would set me up a discount page for my subscribers and he agreed. If you want to see the page created click here.

Creating a subscriber discount page not only increases sales but it also shows I am working to get the best deal I can for my subscribers. Any long time subscriber of mine will know I strive to get them a lot of discounts. I plan to promote this product to my subscribers on Friday. More on this and the tactics I use as it happens.

That’s all I did today, as its Monday I need to wind into the week but I will be busy tomorrow as you will see :-)

Until tomorrow.

John

Good start to the month John!

I nicked one of your ideas by including a “Subscribe to this blog” opt-in form to my blog. I’m not 100% happy with the layout but it’s as good as it’s going to get at this time of the day 😉

    John,

Great looking Blog – very well presented (with a little/big help from Dan). Presentation is really good.

I don’t know how you are going to have the time to write a daily blog but I am certainly looking forward to “Diaries of John Thornhill – Aged ??.1/2)

    Keep up the good work.

    All the best

I entirely agree about treating your affiliates properly. I’ve just paid our D9 Hosting affiliates as it’s the 1st of the month – I trust you received your payout 😉

Great idea John, Your ebook product is one of the first things I started with so I’m interested in following what you are doing.
    There’s nothing like digital products.

Maybe if you get time you could discuss the process of how you chose the 2 brand new products that you mentioned in your post.

    Regards,
    Gary

    Hey Johnny,
Great looking blog. I like your placement of Google Adsense. In some areas it’s hard to tell where your blog starts and google adds end. lol And I also like the colours you used. Very easy on the eyes. This has gotten me quite excited I must say. I love ALL your advice, and to be sitting there with you day after day for a whole month can only HELP me plan MY days better.
You are what us Aussies call a “Top Bloke” Johnny.

    Hey John,

I’ve been a subscriber for over 18 months now to your newsletter! Been through the ups and downs you’ve had mate, although I haven’t been in the eBay business for almost 2 years – there’s a lot more to be made outside of eBay I’ve found. 😉

    John,
Wow!This is a sweet start! You are good at everything you do.
My daughter is 10 weeks old today and I don’t see myself going to work out of home soon.I will be reading your blog everyday to see if I can borrow a leaf from you so that I can become a successful work from home mum.
99% of the products I have are from you and I can already see a sign of good things to come.
You are a hard working man and I believe success will follow you all the way.

From what I understand, Dave’s Online Videos is always now $17 a month. So not really a special discount. I do agree though, it is a quality product.

My eyes lit on this line like it was formatted in bold neon letters: “when I announced this blog on Friday I found my earnings increased by over 500%.” That is an astounding figure. Are you referring to your total revenue, or just your AdSense revenue? At any rate, I will be following this blog closely this month, as my main marketing channel, Google AdWords, has suddenly and inexplicably taken a nosedive and I’m casting about for fresh ideas. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments everyone, please keep them coming.

Jo – I don’t know how I will fit everything in but I will do my best :-)

Paula – Yes, I received your affiliate payment, thanks, nice to see you’re looking after your affiliates 😉

    Gary – Dave’s Online Videos costs $27 from http://www.davesonlinevideos.com/

I know I’m not the 1st to offer the discount but it’s still a discount and will still help with sales.

River Otter – I’m afraid the increased earnings were from my own products, mostly from ClickBank. The AdSense revenue is nothing to boast about I’m afraid.

The real money is in creating your own products and I hope to prove that with 2 product launches this month.

John…I can hardly wait to follow your day. I learned a lot from your newsletters and comments on PlanetSMS. So I am going to try to copy your processes, even if I don’t plan to be on EBay anytime soon. I suspect that the things you do to promote your business can be converted to the websites I’m working on.

    Here’s to your success and, as a by-product, mine…Pat

    Hi John –

I’ve only recently been introduced to you, having bought two of your eBay guides two weeks ago (WSO). So forgive me if this is common knowledge, but curious as to how you manage your affiliate program? i.e, do you partner up with an affiliate network like Clickbank? Based on the details of this blog entry (i.e., you paid your affiliates today), it sounds as if you’re managing your own affiliate program? If so, do you use JROX or some other tool to assist with this?

Thanks, and look forward to checking back here daily!

Talk about getting to be a “fly on the wall” as we say here in the US. From this vantage point I should be learning a lot this month! My own blog is a niche site and I don’t do any serious marketing to my readers and site visitors although I just joined ebay’s affiliate program. I joined Amazon’s affiliate program, as well, recently, and hope to discover how to promote these things as I read your blog, John. I agree your blog pages are easy on the eyes and that is very helpful, itself. We are all ruining our eyes staring into these computer screens! Thanks, John!

I don’t have my own to sell yet but I do have some ideas and am doing lots of research, taking notes from the pro’s etc. It will happen. 😉

    Hey John,
I do admit one needs to be on Dave’s newsletter subscriber list to know what the discount link is.
But that one is a permanent discount offer if you’re one of his subscribers.

Showing your structure is nice to see. The tools you use(not how you use them) is important as it gives us all a better understanding of how and why you do things.
