This is the first blog post I have written from my new office.
I will have some pictures online soon and I may even do a video tour but at the moment the place is upside down with boxes everywhere so I’ll wait till I’m all set up before I do that. My office is situated 9 floors high right in the heart of Sunderland City center only 10 minutes away from home.
This is my third day in my office and I must tell you I wish I had done this years ago. The main reason is because I come here to work so my mindset is different, there are no distractions and I can get a lot more done. In fact I have only put in about 6-8 hours real work so far this week and I have gotten more done than I would have done in a week at home.
Of course I know having an office isn’t for everyone and it also depends where you are at with your business but let me tell you when you work from home you are never away from ‘work’ and it’s all too easy to check your pc. You know…
- I’ll just check my emails.
- I’ll just check my sales
- I’ll just check the Warrior Forum
Let me tell you my computers at home were turned on for around 15 hours per day. Now this is not the case. Now I ‘go to work’. As strange as that may sound (I mean aren’t we doing this to quit work) I really look forward to it everyday. I now find myself working less as I have less distractions, just give me 2-5 hours per day in a work environment and I know I will get more done.
I am also planning a lot more, in fact on Monday I am meeting up with 2 Internet Marketers in my office to plan a product launch. This was simply not possible when I worked from home. We will spend all day ‘working’ and I know we will get so much more done.
So if getting an office is something you have considered in the past let me tell you that although it’s early days this was one of the best things I have ever done. In fact this is my last ‘work’ for the day and I’m going home to spend some quality time with my family. I’ll be back in around 18 hours time and won’t see a PC till then…
… which is brilliant

May 7, 2009Congrats on the new office Sounds like a very productive move.
No PC for 18 hours! – really?
Even if I had an office away from home, I don’t know if I could resist the urge to hop online at home
Good for you

May 8, 2009Congrats John On your new move to the office,
If you want to grow your business, then you have to get an office to more work done, with less time involved, as well as distractions. That keeps us from getting anything done. lol
Look forward to the pics john

May 9, 2009Congratulations on the new office John.
Now you can say that you REALLY own your own business cuz there is the monthly lease payment on the office. Not quite the same as saying you have a house payment to make each month.
Good luck.

May 10, 2009Hi John,
Must be very exciting having your own office. I cant wait to get mine and know that when I turn off the lights at the end of the day I can go home and relax.
Also it can be a very long day at home when you are working there in the day then spending the night there too. Sometimes it can be a case of ARGGHH GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Well done and all the best.
Steve.

May 12, 2009Congratulations John on your new office! It really shows that you really went far by now. I’m planning to get an office as well, it is a good idea and I’m going to be more productive if i’m in a work environment rather than just stay at home.

May 12, 2009Well done John, I want one, lol, I’m only making dribs and drabs of cash at the moment and I can’t convince the Mrs this is a serious venture, any advice would be great?
Did you ever have this problem?

May 12, 2009Congratulations John,
Another advantage is no wife or girlfriend complaining about the home office being untidy…
Thanks

May 12, 2009I also got an office this year for the first time and agree with John: the temptation to fatigue is removed- once more work is work and home is home. For the tiny expense of £120per week. Never again will I have a home office- it is crucial to make a distinctive break. I feel tremendously motivated each day! I run several businesses, the least of which is my ebay selling online, and so I have several rooms for the paperwork of each. It pays to be organised! Good luck with your enterprise! Zowoco

May 12, 2009John, I would also like to congratulate you on your wise decision to get an office….I know it would be hard to be productive in the home office, when you get to the level you are at now.
I can’t wait to see the pic’s and maybe one day I will pop in to see you. Good Luck and thanks for all your help in the MASTERCLASS being one of your students is probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

May 12, 2009Nice one, John. I guess I kind of work from an ‘office’ already in that most of the internet work is done while I’m at work in my shops, but I do still get on when I am at home! Really good move having a dedicated space though. Can’t wait to see the video!
Enjoy the journey.

May 12, 2009That’s to show what DESIRE & DETERMINATION means! John have the desire to succeed and he did, what a great story about you John, I know that here on the other side of the screen, are a bunch of us following your steps and one day we all will get an office is that is what we want, in my case I have a four bedroom house and three of them are empty so just me and my wife at home, no need for an office at this point, later? who knows, I know that thia is still one more step for John, he will be doing even better in the near future, congratulations John!

May 12, 2009Congrats John
I’ve been contemplating getting an office for a while now, but keep thinking that it’s better to pay towards the house payment rather than pay the rent on the office. And then I thought I should buy an office (as an investment) as the payments would be just a bit more than renting, but I keep procrastinating…
The interruptions at home are very disruptive with the Wife thinking I’m always available for a quick chat or to put the bin out, pick up kids, get some milk from the shops, etc. I love her dearly but you know the story!
But at what stage should you take that step and move into an office. I said that when I was making a net profit of $4k/month I would do it… I reached that goal but then I said I would do it when I made $4k/month for 3 months in a row. I know when I go out and do it I’ll regret not doing it earlier.
So, John when is the right time?
Cheers
Dan

May 12, 2009Hi John
Do you “dress up” more now that you have to go out into the real world to get to work?
Walking round the streets of Sunderland in the standard IM fear of just a dressing gown might get you into trouble
Andrew
p.s. Love those BMsecret video’s, my site will be ready by the end of this month at the latest.

May 16, 2009As you say John it is very easy when working from home to just look at different parts of your business.
I found when working full time that the best time to be productive was after everyone had left the office at 5.00 pm. You will certainly feel more work orientated whilst working in an office and as you say more productive.
During the coming weeks it will feel strange and you will have a need to adjust to the new working pratice if you have been in the habit whilst at home of looking at the business. The danger will be when in the office and you reach a time that you should leave that you will say I will just do this one more item and then go home.
Good luck in your new environment.
What are the views like at that height?

May 19, 2009Sounds like a great move John, I have tried working from home, but I now work from the pub with my pen and note book or in the local library with my lap top, its a lot more productive, just doing this at home and interupted whilst typing this!! QED.
Cheers
Rob
