In this blog post I’m going to talk about Facebook pages and why you should have one, and I’m also going to give you a real world example to prove that Facebook ‘like’ pages is big business.
First of all lets look at some interesting and quite frankly unbelievable facts about Facebook.
- Facebook is the second most popular site on the Internet second only to Google and currently has over 600 Million active users. With 50% of those users logging in on any given day, that is 300 Million users per day on average.
- Facebook receives over 100 billion hits per day.
- Facebook has around 500 thousand new users joining every day.
- If Facebook was a country and its users were the population, it would be the 3rd most populated country in the world. To put that in perspective, the United States of America would be the 4th.
- More than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook. Are you one of them? If you’re not you should be.
OK, So we now realize that there is the potential to receive massive amounts of traffic from Facebook, but how do we set things up to start receiving this traffic?
Simple! We set up a Facebook ‘like’ page. (Formerly and sometimes still called a fan page)
This is big business and most of the big companies already have Facebook pages, I’m sure you’ve seen a TV ad and at the end a Facebook page is advertised. So why are these big companies doing this? Simple! To connect with their audience.
Let’s use this page from Adidas Clothing as an example:
I can guarantee you right now that there is no way Adidas could have gained access to over 8 million people any other way for free other than creating a Facebook page. Sure offline they could have done it if they had invested a ton of money in doing so but on the flip side the investment would have to be continuous. Online and with Facebook Adidas has been able to successfully build up a ‘like’ page to up to 8,784,010 fans to date.
What’s even better is, anytime Adidas wants to get on the forefront of all their fans minds, all they need to do is update their Facebook status (comment on their own page), and that update will be able to be viewed by all 8.7 Million of their friends. Now imagine being able to harness such a power for yourself. I know, it’s scary isn’t it!
Now if you’re reasonably new to Facebook let me explain two things in a little more detail.
How Adidas have grown their page virally.
How Adidas now has access to every one of the fans on their fan page.
So How Did Adidas’ Page Grow to 8.7 Million Fans?
Well, it all happened using a part of Facebook that makes it the most viral network in the world. This feature is called the Facebook Newsfeed and everyone on Facebook has their own unique feed that is seen when they visit their Facebook homepage.
The newsfeed is a live compilation of all the activity that your Facebook friends are engaging in over Facebook. You can see all your friends posting on other friends pages, posting on their own page and joining events.
So if I were to see a friend or fan of mine had joined a page that caught my eye and then I decided that I would like to join the page then all of my friends would see that action in their newsfeeds and be able to join also, creating a viral snowball effect with every person who joins over Facebook.
This is a great way to build social proof for businesses and this is exactly how Adidas has grown to a stage that they have over 8.7 Million fans on their page.
So How Does Adidas Get Access To All Its Fans Over Facebook?
Well, in the same way that actions from other pages in my network get featured in my newsfeed, the same applies to pages that I am a fan of.
Every time Adidas posts a status update (comment on their page) then all 8,784,010 of their fans will have the opportunity to see the status update on their news feed.
Win, win for everybody, fans get their updates and Adidas reaches out to millions of targeted fans.
So What Does All This Mean For You?
Well, this basically means that if you want your business to grow, expand and get exposure to those outside of your main customer base, then the best action that you can take is to create a Facebook Page and start generating fans that can help you grow your business.
Each customer or person who ‘Likes’ your page will have that action of joining your business page featured for all of their friends to see. This will increase your businesses exposure and it will help provide your business with the essential social proof that comes along with a friend of someone’s recommending your business.
So What is a ‘Like’ Page?
A ‘Like’ Page, sometimes known as a ‘Fan’ Page, is a page that you can setup inside of your Facebook account that allows you to present your business to Facebook users, just like the Adidas example above. Unlike owning your own website there are a limited number of settings that accompany setting up a Facebook page, which means that there are a limited number of opportunities in a Facebook Like Page to make your own page. However the main purpose of your page is to get people to click the ‘like’ button to grow your page virally.
How do I Get People to Click The ‘Like’ Button on my Page?
What you need to do is offer an incentive to get people to ‘like’ your page, this is best done by offering a freebie, this is a little like offering something via a squeeze page. However, unlike the prospect having to enter their name and email to receive their gift all they have to do is click ‘like’, it’s this simple action what makes the whole process so effective.
Sounds Great, so How Can I Build a Like Page of my Own?
Simple, you use Like Page Builder, this amazing software I have created along with Dave Nicholson can create your Facebook ‘like’ pages in seconds. And best of all it’s free, and before you think ‘what’s the catch?’ There is an upgrade option but the free version does the job just as well. The upgrade just makes things easier.
If you want to see an example of a page created with Like Page Builder then check out my Facebook page:

And when you are ready to start building a Facebook ‘like’ page of your very own go and grab Like Page Builder for free.

April 21, 2011Hi John,
Great post and yes I agree everyone should be setting up their own like pages, it can explode your business.
I’ve been learning facebook this past couple of months and see a lot of potential behind it…there’s stuff in there that can be exploited to it’s fullest that few know little about. Yes there are plenty that know how to set up a personal account, but I see most using that account to post a lot of their metarial too, from their blogs and affiliate links etc and facebook at present may turn a blind eye, but they do stipulate your personal account is more for socialising, hint: that’s why they invented like pages for business.
It’s OK to use an 80% personal and a 20% for some business, like telling people you have created a new like page, would you like to head on over and have a look or something like that.
I’m also starting to get a few emails through from people eager to learn more on it, because I’d been telling a few I was going to learn everything I knew on it…Ahh, now I kind of stuck, going to have to get the old videos going again ha…:):)
I wrote a post a while back called “duplicate content” about Ezine articles and the shake up Google gave them, Ezine turned a blind eye to a lot of stuff going on, but when google give them a slap, people started to lose articles right left and center, they blamed Ezine…but all Ezine told them was go back and read their terms of service.
Now I’m not saying facebook will do the same on personal profiles, but I ain’t taking the chance
John, this is an interesting post that everyone should take on board, and getting yourself and Dave’s free likepage builder can increase that chance even more…I already have it
Catch you later Mr Thornhill.
Eamon.

April 21, 2011Hi John,
I have my page up now already with Like Page builder and I have big plans for the future with it http://www.facebook.com/dansumnermarketing
Your fan page like you say is another way for you to stay in touch with your subscribers, but it’s real time and real interaction and worth doing.
Great product and good explanation John

April 25, 2011Cool Dan! I can’t wait to start my own with Like Page Builder but am just soaking up the sun for a couple of weeks on the south coast (boy it’s hot) before I get into any more internet projects. This is such an excellent way to build a list, raise your business profile AND get front of mind promotion powerfully for free by updating status regularly, like John says.
And this super product is a total no brainer – simple idea – takes the chore part out of creating a page – no hype – I like it!! 😀

I’m very new to FB but its been on my list a long time to explore the massive potential. You and Dave have now made that so easy. I got the product just as soon as you released it and I’ve even put up a review on my site.
Have a great Easter break and thanks for everything.

April 21, 2011Hey John,
It’s the biggest social event in history for Internet Marketers, as a mater of fact, the actual *pay per click* service on Facebook is by far creating online success stories far greater than Google adWords!
The advertisers know their dollar is better spent on the Facebook platform of advertising, as more and more people are looking for *informational solutions* on the social circuit!
Great post john….Ed.

April 21, 2011Hi John,
It’s a great post and Link Page Builder is a great product.
I had been putting off creating my own Facebook pages, probably down to lack of knowledge about the why, what and how of the whole thing and my (unfounded) prejudice against Facebook!
But having signed up for a free membership with Link Page Builder, and from having no knowledge at all, just following the straight forward instructions, I built my first page within half an hour of registering.
Now I’m already building a fan base, and to cap it all, made a couple of commissions from you guys too!
LPB is THE BUSINESS! So no more excuses. Get a Facebook Page or fall way behind.
Thanks guys.
Now have a rest and enjoy the long weekend!

April 21, 2011Hi John,
Just downloaded like page builder, it looks awesome. Will be sinking my teeth into it.
There are a lot of folks still out there who don’t know about the power of Facebook. There are also a lot of folks who are on Facebook who don’t know about the power of like pages and what these pages can do for business. Great post, great information.
Facebook is growing and growing. Like Facebook or not, it only makes sense to become involved where there are massive amount of people gravitating.

April 21, 2011John,
Thank you for your very clear and precise explaination of Facebook’s value. I always thought of it as people chatting and spending too much time talking about nothing in particular. However, your post explains the value of using this as a marketing tool. Thank you so much for your continued advice and timely instruction.
Have a restful and enjoyable Easter weekend.

April 22, 2011LOL…
I took up your challenge John.
For once I haven’t relied on any techy help from anyone!
(John rang and told me to get one built using LPB… so I figured I better try)
And hey presto:
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/RandySmith/109797362439601
It REALLY was as easy as you said it would be!…
AND – Iwth no techy help – I even added an optin box after the initial ‘like’ – with the promise of more gifts for optin in…. So that will help add subscribers to my lists too… as well as face book fans
I’m really pleased Dave put the videos in the membership to follow along with
Great piece of kit!

April 23, 2011OK – So Building the ‘Like’ page was EASY with Like Page Builder….
The techy stuff wasn’t a struggle due to the excellent videos…
BUT
Posting the right link was obviously FAR TOO TECHY for me….LOL

April 23, 2011Thanks John for the free software.
Facebook is tricky. Putting up a page and getting some fans is great (done that, been there) but getting them into your sales funnel requires more than pretty graphics and a PPC campaign.
Not that I am anti-Facebook, just that the strategy for making money on it is different than say Google or Yahoo traffic.
John Thornhill
April 24, 2011The way I see it is the traffic is free so why wouldn’t you take advantage of it?

April 25, 2011Hey John,
